For as long as I can remember, I’ve been intensely observing the people around me. By watching, staring and studying, body language and bone structure, tone of voice and clothing choices, I better understand the subtleties of being alive, emotionally and physically.

Growing up in a small town, I spent most of my time outside. When I wasn’t searching for living things like caterpillars, tadpoles or frogs, I was inside watching tv or drawing. Connecting with characters on-screen, helped me unlock and discover parts of my identity off-screen. Now, I create my own characters.

My figures emulate quiet, buried or purposely hidden thoughts. They make the emotions of living visible. Through body language and facial expressions, my work hints at the things people avoid talking about, the things just beneath the surface. Anxiety, fear, self-consciousness and shame. I sculpt each figure until they stir something inside me. My hope is to start the conversations that don’t come up in everyday situations because I’ve never found small talk interesting.
